I love it for the scenary, proximity to Phoenix, the cool weather, and the Sedona ambiance for post race celebrating. This was my third year running a Sedona Marathon event.
This is the perfect race to convince your non-running friends to join you for. It is easy to sell a weekend escape from the city, with 4 distances available and afterwards you can bask in the the sun, fresh breeze, good food, a soak and scenary
I’ve run marathons and races for years but rarely invite people to join me. The first year that I ran Sedona a group of friends came along and cheered for me at the end of the race. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so emotional at a race. My brother ran to meet me at the end and wrapped me in a hug. My friends were there. I have cherished that day. We went out for pizza afterwards then wandered around Phoenix and then a few people rode motorcycles back to Phoenix and the rest sat in the hot tub.
That day was glorious and has continued to be memorable for me. That was the first time I had my family and friends at a race. I didn’t think it would matter to me, but it is the sweetest memory.
We are making a tradition of that race partly because it usually falls on my birthday weekend and in a quieter way because that first year Lance was with us and he isn’t anymore. Like he did for everyone quietly encouraging by just being there, I hope I can make my friends feel as special as they made me feel after Sedona 2013 and I’m so glad the ones I have continue to come and run with me.
